The Importance of Great In-House Legal Training
In-house legal training is crucial for maintaining a team’s efficiency and expertise in the fast-paced world of law. By investing in a structured training program, companies can ensure their legal teams are not only well-versed in the latest legal standards but also equipped with practical skills tailored to their specific industry needs.
Effective training transforms your team from simply competent to exceptionally skilled, driving better legal outcomes and fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Whether it's enhancing job performance or preparing for future challenges, a well-designed in-house legal training program is key to achieving excellence in legal operations.
So let’s get straight into it. Here are 10 powerful indicators of an effective in-house legal team training program.
- Relevance: the training must immediately improve your team’s ability to do their job
- Regular: training must occur at least once per month
- Digitised & Centralised: wherever possible – capture the training digitally and store it in an accessible library for ongoing usage
- Value: the training must increase the value of each attendee – they should be better for having attended it
- Takeaways: the training must include takeaway “ready reckoner” materials that help solidify the newly acquired knowledge into permanent memory
- Internal vs External Delivery: certain topics (e.g. org knowledge, sector, etc.) are best delivered internally, others (e.g. hard/soft skills) may be better delivered by external providers
- Scheduled: core training should be published at least a year in advance – in-house leaders must commit in a way commensurate to its importance
- Participation: the quality of your participation in training should be the subject of a performance review – no phones, no emailing, just full concentration
- Short & Sweet: never more than 45 min of content delivery and never less than 15 min of team discussion
- External Training Rule: if a team member attends external training – they must present the learnings from that training to the internal training audience. Always.
Try and apply these 10 training-related techniques to your internal legal team and you will be far better placed to utilise the power of knowledge to leverage team performance.
